Our Name - Leaning Tree Community School

The Leaning Tree is a greater Geraldton-Greenough icon. People have asked why we have chosen our name. This tale will help to explain.

The Leaning Tree began life as a tiny seed in the fertile soil of the Greenough Flats.

Pure winter rains and the bright Geraldton sunshine fed and warmed the seed which emerged as a vigorous seedling amongst the wheat and wildflowers.

The seedling grew into a sturdy sapling whose roots ventured deep into the earth, drawing sustenance and anchoring the flourishing plant.

The tree adapted its form, hugging the earth, as it was buffeted by the salty southerly winds. It grew to be a wise and much loved tree, home to many creatures and a little different to other trees in the Mid West. The Leaning Tree became a symbol of courage, generosity, love, patience, truth, respect and peace.

The characteristic 'Leaning Trees of Greenough' are the result of strong winds blown across the Greenough Flats laden with salt from the Indian Ocean. The botanical name of the tree is Eucalyptus camaldulensis - Red River Gum. They are mostly photographed by visitors to the beautiful Mid West Region of Western Australia.

Some people mix our name Leaning Tree with Learning Tree. We like the association. Although our name is Leaning Tree, it is beautiful learning that we are all about.
